Celebrating the Common People

Whether we cause visible ripples in our world, like a Malala Yousefzhai or a Nelson Mandela, or we just float on the current of our lives, we all have a story. We all make ripples in someone else’s life and we all have the message of our existence to transmit. Our new series of interviews -entitled ‘Celebrating the Common People’ - is dedicated to those that may be anonymous for the world at large, but cause the ripples in our lives. We want to tell their story and give them a voice.

Rares Ciornea is an adventurous fifteen year old boy from Brasov. He studies at "Emil Racovita High School" in Brasov and he's always looking for something new to try.

Hello, Rares! How are you today?

I'm pretty good, thank you! I had a wonderful day except that I just found out that my best friend's grandfather died of cancer and I'm a little sad and worried for him. But besides this, I'm in a pretty positive mood.

I'm sorry to hear about your friend! Is he ok?

He will be. He is tough and he's dealing with this in his own way!

I'm glad to hear that! Despite this unfortunate event, you really seem to be in a good mood. Did something recently happen to make you feel so happy?

Well, it was Easter holidays and I was able to spend more time with my family and friends, especially that my grandparents came to visit us and I got to see them too. It's been a while since we were all together so we had a really great time.

You seem to have a really close relationship with your family! Can you tell us more about them?

It's not much to tell actually. We are a weird family but in the good way. My mom is a short woman but with a really strong character who wants to be in control of everything, my dad has a really developed sense of humor and he always makes us laugh and my sister is a little crazy but she helps me with everything and we get along very well, even if we fight all the time! (laugh)

What do you think is the most special thing about your family?

I have to say that the fact that we are a very united family. We are not that kind of family that don't speak to each other and everybody stays in their rooms with their doors locked. We always eat dinner together (it's like a custom) and we watch movies together. I'm really grateful for this!

And what about you? Do you have certain hobbies or passions?

Mostly, I enjoy whatever brings me adrenaline and danger. I like to test my limits everyday and if somebody would ask me to jump out of a plane with a parachute, I would do it without hesitation. Ah, and also I have been playing football at a club since I was little!

If you have to describe yourself in 5 words, what would they be?

Well...I think they would be funny, smart, lazy, sporty and huffy!

Why do you describe yourself as a lazy person?

Because there are just a few things that captivate me and if I'm not interested in something I tend to leave it for tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow and so until the last day. I get bored very easily, unfortunately.

What is your motto in life?

I didn't think of it as a motto but if I were to put it in a quote, it will be "Whatever people say, keep your head up and go ahead!".

If you were exiled to a desert island and you could only take three things with you, what would they be and why?

Mmm..I would take my phone, sunscreen and a mirror! I would take my phone so I can stay in contact with my friends (even though I don't think I will have network there), sunscreen for protection and a mirror because I have to look good no matter where I am.

How do you see yourself in 10 years?

I think that in 10 years I will still be a child. I would still enjoy dangerous and risky activities and I would still make stupid and childish mistakes. I may have a girlfriend or even a wife but without children. If you want to raise children you have to grow up and I don't think I would be ready in 10 years from now!

Do you think you'll do something memorable in your life that people will remember?

I think every man wants to be remembered for something but you can't plan this! You only have to have the courage and the curiosity to try and things will happen naturally! Newton didn't plan to discover gravity but in the end, he discovered it by an apple falling on his head!

Thank you very much,Rares! It was a pleasure talking with you!

Thank you for having me!
